Palace Modello was erected in 1882 on the site of the former Adamić Theatre, in a representative part of Rijeka beside the market and theatre. Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer designed it by combining Renaissance and Baroque motifs with a French-style mansard roof. Originally used by the Rijeka Savings Bank and a social club, its intended splendour is visible in both the façades and former interiors. Sculptural decoration was created by Ignazio Doneghani. The building still serves public cultural functions today. It is best viewed from the space between the market and the Croatian National Theatre, where it helps explain Rijeka's late-nineteenth-century transformation into a monumental bourgeois city.
