The Governor's Palace was built between 1893 and 1896 to a design by Hungarian architect Alajos Hauszmann. Set on elevated ground above the centre, it was conceived in a High Renaissance idiom as the representative residence of Rijeka's governor, with richly decorated salons, marble wall surfaces and views toward the port. A museum has occupied the building since 1948, and the palace itself is regarded as one of its most important exhibits. In 2026 the building is closed to visitors for energy renovation, so it can currently be appreciated from outside. Approaching through the grounds reveals the deliberate relationship between its monumental façade, elevated position and the harbour once overseen by the administration based here.
