Rijeka Natural History Museum stands in Nikola Hosta Park, a few minutes' walk from Korzo. Its history reaches back to 1876, when Joseph Roman Lorenz devised a regional natural-history collection, while it has operated as an independent institution at its present location since 1945. Displays cover the geological history of the Adriatic, oceanographic research, minerals, marine invertebrates, fish, sharks and rays, as well as reptiles and amphibians from the Rijeka region. Aquarium displays and a botanical garden make the museum particularly suitable for families. A visit combines easily with the nearby Governor's Palace and a walk through the surrounding city parks, offering a scientific counterpoint to Rijeka's architectural attractions.
