The Sugar Refinery Palace in the Benčić complex is a key monument of Rijeka's industrial history. It originated as the administrative building of the sugar refinery industry established in Rijeka in 1750, while the complex later served the Tobacco Factory and the Rikard Benčić works. The restored palace now houses the permanent display of the Rijeka City Museum, using richly decorated rooms to trace the city's social and economic development from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. The building is regarded as the largest Baroque structure on the eastern Adriatic. Located in the Art Quarter, it combines easily with MMSU, the library and Children's House and provides an unusually clear introduction to Rijeka's industrial identity.
