The Municipal Palace was constructed in 1873 according to designs by architect Filibert Bazarig, trained in classical Venetian architectural traditions. The need for a new building arose after Rijeka received a new municipal statute in 1872, requiring a modern administrative center for the city government. Bazarig created three harmoniously designed façades in the spirit of Venetian classicism, skillfully connecting the gentle Baroque aesthetics of the Church of Saint Jerome with the classical elements of the adjacent Radio Rijeka building. The palace subsequently became a focal point for political activities as Rijeka's autonomist movement fought to preserve municipal liberties threatened by Hungarian state administration.
