The Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral took its present institutional form in 1961 by combining maritime and historical collections and is based in the Governor's Palace. Its holdings span archaeology, ethnography, art, cultural history and maritime history, interpreting Rijeka and the Croatian Littoral from prehistory to the modern era. The palace itself is central to the museum experience because it was once the governor's representative residence. In 2026 the main building is temporarily closed for energy renovation, while the institution continues through its outlying collections. Visitors should therefore check current access before planning a visit, but the palace and its grounds remain worth including in a walk through central Rijeka.
