Nova Vas is an inland Istrian village administered by the City of Poreč, positioned between Poreč, Višnjan and Tar. Its defining landmark lies below ground: Baredine Cave descends 132 metres into the limestone and is protected as a geomorphological natural monument. The visitor route crosses five chambers to a depth of 60 metres, passing stalactites, stalagmites and curtain-like formations in a constant temperature of around 14°C. The site also introduces visitors to the olm, an endemic animal of the Dinaric karst. Beside the cave are the Traktor Story collection of historic farm machinery, the Konobon Gallery devoted to bread, wine and olive oil, and the Speleolit climbing centre. The narrow-gauge Parenzana railway once passed nearby, completing the journey from Nova Vas to Poreč in 19 minutes. Today Poreč city bus route 1 connects the village with the main bus station via Antonci, returning through Kukci and Špadići.
Nova Vas has a distinctly karst character: the farming village stands above a system of cavities, flowstone and subterranean water most clearly revealed inside Baredine Cave. Explorers reached 80 metres in the early 20th century, while work in the 1970s established its present depth of 132 metres. The cave opened for guided tourism in 1995 as Istria’s first visitor-oriented speleological site. The village’s agricultural story continues at Traktor Story in Gedići near Nova Vas, where historic tractors and threshing machines are displayed, while the Konobon Gallery relates local farming to Istrian bread, olive oil and wine.

Nova Vas has no shoreline of its own, so swimming means travelling to the beaches of Poreč. Donji Špadići is a practical option on the city-bus circuit because route 1 continues from Nova Vas through Kukci and Špadići before returning to Poreč bus station. Its shore alternates between pebbles, rock and paved sunbathing areas, with steps providing easier access to the water. The beach lies two kilometres north of central Poreč, between hotels and close to a sports centre. A walking and cycling promenade connects it with other Poreč bathing spots, allowing a day from Nova Vas to combine a morning at Baredine with an afternoon by the sea.
Begin with a guided tour of Baredine: the prepared route descends through five chambers to 60 metres and involves 270 steps. Back at the surface, continue to Traktor Story’s collection of historic agricultural machinery and then to the Konobon Gallery’s account of bread, oil and wine. Families can use the meadow and picnic area beside the cave, while Speleolit offers a more specialised cave-climbing experience. Finish near the former Nova Vas station on the Parenzana route, tracing the line once used by the narrow-gauge train that covered the journey to Poreč in 19 minutes.
Nova Vas is part of Poreč’s public-transport network through city route 1, a loop running Poreč Bus Station–Antonci–Nova Vas–Kukci–Špadići–Bus Station. Arriva’s summer 2026 timetable lists nine daily departures from Poreč, with the published timings placing Nova Vas about 24 minutes from the terminal. Baredine Cave is reached by continuing along the signed local road towards Gedići; a large car and coach park stands beside the entrance. Poreč bus station provides onward intercity connections to Rijeka, Zagreb and other Croatian destinations.
The visitor route has 270 steps and descends to 60 metres, while the full cave reaches a depth of 132 metres.
Pushchairs cannot enter Baredine Cave; the operator recommends a suitable child carrier for young children.
Yes. City route 1 links Poreč bus station with Nova Vas via Antonci before continuing towards Kukci and Špadići.
