The Euphrasian Basilica is best known for mosaics that draw the eye towards its apse and sanctuary. The present church dates from the sixth century and belongs to the episcopal complex on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Extend the visit to the atrium, baptistery and associated spaces instead of arriving only for a mosaic photograph. Compare the open courtyard with the rhythm of columns inside and pause over smaller decorative details. The ensemble makes the organisation of an early Christian centre within a town tangible. Allow unhurried time and respect the church’s liturgical use. Afterwards, follow the old-town lanes towards Decumanus to reconnect the complex with the rest of Poreč.
