Severin na Kupi
About this place
Severin na Kupi stands in Gorski Kotar, 38 kilometres west of Karlovac, on high ground above the Kupa and beside the historic Louisiana Road. The village is dominated by the Zrinski-Frankopan Castle, developed from a late-15th- or early-16th-century fortress and given its present form during Ivan Oršić’s reconstruction of 1803. Around it lies a six-hectare park protected as a monument of park architecture since 1966; a viewpoint beside the stone well overlooks a bend of the Kupa and the wooded Ravan ridge. Severin also gave its name to Severin County, the administrative territory founded by Maria Theresa in 1776 between the Kupa and the northern Adriatic, including Rijeka. The settlement combines this historical role with access to the river bathing places of Riblje and Klanac. At Riblje, a 2.6-kilometre riverside promenade continues towards Lesci and can also be ridden by bicycle. As the castle is not presented as a conventional museum, a visit centres on its exterior, the protected park, river views and summer time beside the Kupa.
Severin na Kupi is defined by the meeting of the Louisiana Road, the Kupa River and a castle standing on the steep, wooded right bank. The fortress appears in records from 1558, while the Oršić family reshaped it as a residence in 1803. The village’s historical importance exceeds its modest size: in 1776 Maria Theresa established Severin County, an administrative territory extending to Rijeka that survived until 1786. The castle park, protected as a monument of park architecture in 1966, covers six hectares arranged across three levels. From the highest terrace beside the stone well, the view reaches over the Kupa, riverside meadows and the wooded Ravan ridge.

Beaches
Swimming around Severin centres on the Kupa, with the official tourist website identifying Riblje near Severin na Kupi and nearby Klanac as recognised river access points. A local road branches from the Zagreb–Rijeka state road towards Klanac beach, while municipal documents record the Klanac–Kupalište access road as 600 metres long. At Riblje, a swim can be combined with a walk or bicycle ride along the 2.6-kilometre route towards Lesci. These are natural river bathing places rather than seaside beaches with sand and rows of loungers, and their banks and depth change with the Kupa’s water level. Visitors should use established access points and assess river conditions on the day of arrival.
Things to do
Begin with the exterior of the Zrinski-Frankopan Castle and its Chapel of St Florian, then explore the protected park arranged over three terraces. At the stone well, pause at the viewpoint above the Kupa bend, where a weir can be seen below the wooded Ravan ridge. After the historical circuit, descend towards Riblje and follow the developed riverside promenade towards Lesci; the 2.6-kilometre section is suitable for walking or cycling. Anglers need a permit issued under the Kamačnik fishing association’s rules, with day permits also sold at Volta in Severin na Kupi. When water levels are high, typically in spring, autumn or after substantial rain, rafting and canoeing are organised on the Kupa.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Severin na Kupi lies beside the D3 state road, following the historic Louisiana route between Karlovac and Rijeka, making road travel the most direct approach. The Croatian Encyclopaedia places the settlement 38 kilometres west of Karlovac at roughly 200 metres above sea level. For Klanac bathing place, drivers leave the state road for a local access road descending towards the Kupa, while Riblje is reached through the wider Severin area. The castle and park stand beside the village, but the river bathing locations do not form part of the same short walking circuit. As Severin na Kupi has no listed railway station, a car or bicycle is the practical option for moving among the castle, Klanac, Riblje and Lesci.
