Also known as Ogulin Old Town, Frankopan Castle was built around 1500 by Bernardin Frankopan as part of the defence against Ottoman incursions. This Renaissance fortress stands on a cliff above the Dobra canyon and Đulin ponor, a position that makes its former strategic role immediately apparent. A Military Frontier garrison occupied it from the 16th century; after losing its defensive purpose in 1865, it became a prison. The Ogulin County Museum has occupied the castle since 1967. A visit combines the architecture of the stronghold with collections on Ogulin’s history, heritage and mountaineering tradition.
