Moravice
About this place
Moravice is a Gorski Kotar settlement between Vrbovsko and Brod Moravice, shaped decisively by the Karlovac–Rijeka railway. Its School Railway Museum, housed in the dormitory of the local railway technical school, preserves objects connected with roughly a century and a half of railway life. The tradition remains active rather than purely historical: the Moravice secondary school still teaches railway transport, electrical engineering and mechanical subjects. A very different side of the village appears at Čogrljevo Lake, a small reservoir supplied by five springs. The Vede waterfall once provided power for a sawmill and a mill, while a woodland path now circles the water and reaches its springs through conifers. Moravice also marks the endpoint of the easy, 18.4-kilometre Dobra cycling route from Vrbovsko, which follows the river valley before reaching the lake. A visit can therefore combine a train journey, railway heritage and a short forest outing. Despite being grouped with the wider Kvarner region, Moravice is an inland Gorski Kotar destination rather than a seaside resort.
The railway is Moravice’s defining thread: the village has both a railway technical school and a museum collection devoted to the line that transformed this part of Gorski Kotar. The School Railway Museum was assembled with support from the local school, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Town of Vrbovsko and railway workshops. Away from the tracks, Čogrljevo Lake reveals another aspect of Moravice and is supplied by five small springs. Its Vede waterfall once powered a sawmill and a mill, allowing the village to combine transport, educational and watermill heritage within a compact area.

Things to do
Begin in Moravice around the railway complex, arranging a visit to the School Railway Museum in the student residence beforehand. After viewing signals, lamps, tools and photographs from the area’s railway past, continue to Čogrljevo Lake and follow the conifer-lined path towards its springs. Cyclists can make the arrival part of a longer outing on the Dobra route: the marked trail from Vrbovsko is 18.4 kilometres long, graded easy and ends beside the lake in Moravice. Returning along the same route follows the Dobra valley and can be paired with a later stop at the Kamačnik excursion area near Vrbovsko.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Moravice has a station on the rail corridor linking Zagreb, Karlovac, Ogulin and Rijeka, making train travel both practical and central to the village’s identity. HŽ Passenger Transport’s timetable valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026 lists Moravice as the destination of selected services and as a stop on the Rijeka route. Check the chosen travel date carefully because some departures operate only on specified days. A bicycle or car is more convenient for continuing beyond the station area to Čogrljevo Lake or joining the Dobra cycling trail.
