Brod Moravice
About this place
Brod Moravice stands at roughly 560 metres in western Gorski kotar, between the railway and steep descents toward the Kupa valley. The municipality places it 55 kilometres from Rijeka and 80 kilometres from Zagreb, yet its character comes from small villages, wooded viewpoints and the border river with Slovenia. The parish Church of St Nicholas dates from 1434 and was restored in 1834; an earlier defensive tower survives beside its sanctuary. Delač House, built in 1644, is presented as the oldest surviving house in Gorski kotar, while local collections document railway life, schooling, fruit growing and travelling household-goods makers. Less than a kilometre north, Gornji Kuti brings together the Croatian Village Reading Room, the Kočki zvon community bell, Akiko Sato’s Buna Bunar installation and tiny forest libraries. Walkers can choose viewpoints above the Kupa, the 4.9-kilometre Planica–Volfi trail or the 1.1-kilometre Lazica educational path with 35 information boards. In summer, Doluš serves as the local Kupa bathing place, while the railway provides an alternative to arriving entirely by car.
Brod Moravice was shaped by the railway, surrounding forests and the deeply cut Kupa valley along the Croatian–Slovenian border. The main settlement stands near 560 metres, while the municipality’s villages descend toward the river or occupy wooded Gorski kotar plateaus. Delač House from 1644, the Church of St Nicholas from 1434 and numerous small chapels express the area’s age more clearly than any conventional urban centre. Less than a kilometre away in Gornji Kuti, the Croatian Village Reading Room, the Kočki zvon community bell and Akiko Sato’s Buna Bunar connect village traditions with contemporary art. Brod Moravice is therefore best understood not through one headline sight but as a network of paths, sacred buildings, heritage collections and viewpoints toward the Kupa, Kostel and the Slovenian mountains.
Things to see
The parish Church of St Nicholas bears the date 1434 on its façade, was restored in 1834 and incorporates a bell tower adapted from a 16th-century defensive structure. Delač House, built in 1644, is regarded locally as the oldest surviving house in Gorski kotar, while Ožanić House dates from 1826. At Šimatovo, a fourteen-station Way of the Cross links the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross with St Michael’s Chapel. Gornji Kuti presents a different kind of heritage through its Croatian Village Reading Room, the Kočki zvon community bell and Buna Bunar—carved doors created by Akiko Sato for the Rijeka 2020 European Capital of Culture programme.

Beaches
Doluš is the principal local summer bathing spot on the Kupa. Information published in 2026 recorded two masonry grills together with tables and benches available to visitors, plus possible rental of a boat, tents and loungers. This is a river site rather than a managed seaside beach: the Kupa’s depth, temperature and current vary with rainfall, so conditions must be judged on arrival. Trails above Doluško polje overlook the river, while the municipality’s description of Medveja stena identifies Zavrtke on the Slovenian bank as another notable riverside location. Reaching that opposite bank requires crossing the international border at an authorised point rather than attempting a direct informal crossing from the trail.
Things to do
Begin in the centre with the Church of St Nicholas and Delač House from 1644, then seek out local collections devoted to the railway, education, fruit growing and Gorski kotar’s travelling craftspeople. Continue on foot for less than a kilometre to Gornji Kuti, home to the village reading room, Kočki zvon, Buna Bunar and one of the small forest libraries. For an easy nature walk, choose Lazica: the 1.1-kilometre trail ranges from 666 to 705 metres and includes 35 interpretive panels. More experienced walkers can link Stenica with Medveja stena for views over the Kupa and Kostel, or follow the 4.9-kilometre Planica–Volfi route past traces of mills and the unfinished Kupa canal project.

Practical information
Practical information
Brod Moravice stands at about 560 metres, so temperatures and trail conditions differ noticeably from Rijeka, approximately 55 kilometres away. Footwear with reliable grip is important for Medveja stena and other steep viewpoints; the fenced platform does not remove the hazard of the drop below. Lazica is the gentler option, covering 1.1 kilometres with only 39 metres between its lowest and highest points. The ethnographic and historical displays are small local collections rather than a large museum with continuous opening hours, so visits should be arranged in advance with local organisers or the municipality. At Doluš, swimmers should also expect changing natural river conditions rather than the supervision and fixed environment of a pool.
Parking
The municipality’s official infrastructure register records parking areas in front of and behind the Brod Moravice cultural centre, as well as a car park beside the cemetery. These are the practical places for central heritage stops and nearby streets, avoiding obstruction on narrow local roads. For walks beginning in Moravička Sela, the municipality’s route description directs visitors to a small parking area in the village centre beside the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Capacity is limited and these spaces are not described as a paid urban parking system, so vehicles should not block residents, cemetery access or emergency routes. Large purpose-built visitor car parks should not be expected around Doluš and the outlying hamlets.
Getting there and around
Brod Moravice has a station on the railway that shaped the settlement for generations, and HŽ Passenger Transport includes Brod Moravice among its destinations. Departures should be checked for the chosen date because timetables change. By road, the village is reached along Gorski kotar’s regional routes; there is no motorway junction in the settlement itself, so the final approach uses local roads. The municipality gives approximate distances of 55 kilometres to Rijeka and 80 kilometres to Zagreb. A car is more practical for descending toward Doluš, Planica, Kocijani and the other Kupa-side villages, whereas the centre and Gornji Kuti are less than a kilometre apart and can readily be linked on foot.
