Gerovo
About this place
Gerovo is a Gorski Kotar settlement at 584 metres above sea level, standing on the Delnice–Čabar–Vrhnika road and 15 kilometres south of Čabar. The Croatian Encyclopaedia records 593 residents in 2021, a first mention as Gerona in 1028 and a parish founded in 1504, the oldest in Gorski Kotar. The village landmark is the parish church of Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus, built in 1842. Gerovo makes a useful western base for the upper Kupa and Risnjak National Park: the road towards Crni Lug reaches Razloge, where the descent to the Kupa spring begins beside the Gorski Kotar House of Knowledge. Swimming is possible in the upper Kupa during warm weather, but Gerovo has no sea coast or Adriatic beach. Near Tatinski Vrh is a 22-metre cave with notable formations. Weekday buses connect Gerovo with Mali Lug, Tršće and Čabar, with transfers towards Delnice and Rijeka; the city timetable states that services do not run at weekends. A car is therefore the most reliable option for reaching the Kupa spring and scattered mountain villages.
Gerovo belongs to the City of Čabar, yet its position on the road towards Delnice and Crni Lug makes it a southern gateway to the Čabar region. The village stands at 584 metres, 15 kilometres south of Čabar, and had 593 residents in 2021. Its name first appears as Gerona in 1028, while the local parish was founded in 1504 and is regarded as the oldest in Gorski Kotar. The present church of Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus dates from 1842. Forests, the Gerovo plateau and the nearby upper Kupa define its mountain identity, while the Gerovo–Crni Lug road provides a direct approach to Razloge and the Kupa spring in Risnjak National Park.

Beaches
Gerovo is inland and has no seaside beach; local summer bathing is associated with the upper Kupa instead. The regional tourist board describes the clear Kupa as suitable for swimming in summer but also notes that its upper course remains wild in places. Choose only a calm, accessible stretch of bank and avoid entering after heavy rain or when the current is strong. From Gerovo, bathing places in the valley are reached by the roads through the Čabar area. The Kupa spring below Razloge is a protected visitor site within Risnjak National Park, not a developed swimming beach.
Things to do
Begin exploring Gerovo at the 1842 church of Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus, recalling that the local parish itself dates to 1504. Then take the road towards Crni Lug to Razloge, where the Risnjak National Park car park, information point and Gorski Kotar House of Knowledge mark the start of the walk down to the Kupa spring. A park ticket also covers the spring area together with Leska, Risnjak and Snježnik. For another natural feature near Gerovo, the Croatian Encyclopaedia records a 22-metre cave with formations near Tatinski Vrh. The cave should only be approached when access and qualified guidance are officially organised.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Gerovo lies on the Delnice–Čabar–Vrhnika road, connecting the Čabar area by car with Delnice and the Slovenian border. The City of Čabar’s weekday timetable includes a departure from Mali Lug at 05:30, reaching Gerovo at 05:33, and an afternoon bus leaving Gerovo for Tršće at 15:24. Journeys from Čabar towards Rijeka, Delnice and Zagreb involve transfers, including at Gerovo or Delnice. The published schedule explicitly states that these routes do not operate on Saturdays or Sundays. For Razloge, the Kupa spring or villages along the upper river, travelling by car is considerably more practical than relying on the bus.
