About this place

Crni Lug is a Gorski kotar village on the eastern edge of Risnjak National Park and the principal base for its Bijela Vodica entrance. The bus stop on Selska Street is about 1.5 kilometres from the park entrance, beside which Pansion Risnjak combines accommodation with a restaurant. The Leska educational trail offers the most accessible introduction to the park, while the ascent of Veliki Risnjak requires substantially more time and hiking preparation. The protected landscape encompasses mountain forests, lynx and chamois habitat and the karst source of the Kupa; visitors must remain on marked routes, and an admission ticket is valid for two days. Crni Lug has no seaside beach, and swimming is not its defining activity, although excursions toward the Kupa valley reveal a contrasting river landscape. A car remains the most practical way to arrive because public transport is highly limited. Park planning documents place Crni Lug roughly 60 kilometres from Rijeka and 132 kilometres from Zagreb. After a walk, the locally specific finish is a meal of Gorski kotar dishes, game or blueberry strudel at the restaurant beside the park administration.

Crni Lug lies within the administrative area of Delnice, but its visitor identity is shaped far more strongly by neighbouring Risnjak National Park. The Crni Lug/Bijela Vodica entrance and park administration stand about 1.5 kilometres from the village bus stop. Here, everyday life in Gorski kotar meets hiking routes toward Leska and Veliki Risnjak. The national park was established in 1953 and supports lynx, bear, wolf and two small chamois herds. Crni Lug is consequently more than an overnight stop before a summit walk: it functions as the service and interpretation base for exploring Risnjak’s mountain forests, karst terrain and wildlife.

Things to see

Crni Lug is the base for Bijela Vodica, the main entrance to Risnjak National Park, where the park administration and information point are located. Its most accessible highlight is the Leska educational trail: a 4.2-kilometre loop with very little elevation gain, starting a few minutes’ walk west of the administration building. Opened on 4 June 1993 as Croatia’s first educational trail in a national park, its 23 panels introduce the flora, fauna and cultural heritage of Gorski kotar. Crni Lug also has an interpretation centre covering lynx, wolf and bear, the Pesniki bell-ringers, glassmaking and traditional woollen kopice socks.

Stays further afield

Things to do

Begin a first visit at the Bijela Vodica entrance and follow the Leska educational trail, designed as a shorter introduction to Risnjak’s forest communities. More experienced hikers can reserve a full day for Veliki Risnjak, following the park’s current signs and route notices throughout. A second day can focus on the source of the Kupa, a turquoise karst pool in the national park’s northern section. The park also offers an expert-led chamois-watching programme for no more than three participants, with binoculars provided. Back in Crni Lug, a fitting end to the excursion is blueberry strudel or a game dish at Pansion Risnjak beside the park administration.

Food and drink

The most clearly documented local dining address is the restaurant at Pansion Risnjak, immediately beside the national park administration in Crni Lug. The park highlights regional Gorski kotar cooking, game specialities and blueberry strudel, served on a terrace overlooking a small pond and surrounding greenery. This menu makes a particularly suitable finish after the Leska trail or a longer Risnjak hike. The guesthouse also has five double rooms, so the restaurant serves travellers staying overnight by the park entrance. As dining options in the small village are limited, visitors planning lunch should confirm that the kitchen is operating on the day of their visit.

Practical information

Practical information

Visitor information, admission and route rules are available at the Bijela Vodica entrance beside the Risnjak National Park administration. A purchased ticket remains valid for two days, while organised groups must arrange their visit and guide with the park in advance. Inside Risnjak, walking is permitted only on marked trails and in designated visitor areas. Published entrance hours differ between weekdays, weekends and the summer period, so the current schedule should be checked on the park’s official website before departure. Information about the wider Delnice area is available from the tourist office at Lujzinska cesta 47/1 in Delnice, whereas most practical questions about Risnjak itself are handled in Crni Lug.

Parking

Visitors arriving by car use the approach to the official Bijela Vodica entrance, where parking is available beside the park administration. The Parks of Croatia portal explicitly lists parking, while spatial and management documents identify Crni Lug as the national park’s principal service base. As the Leska trail and other marked routes start from this entrance area, vehicles are best left in the designated reception zone rather than along village roads. The official sources consulted do not publish a 2026 parking charge, so no reliable fee can be included in advance. Larger organised groups should notify the park before arrival so that reception arrangements can be coordinated.

Getting there and around

A car is the most dependable way to reach Crni Lug and Risnjak National Park. From Zagreb, official directions follow the motorway to the Ravna Gora exit, continue toward Delnice and use the signposted turn for Crni Lug; the park management plan gives approximate distances of 132 kilometres from Zagreb and 60 kilometres from Rijeka. Arriva lists a bus stop on Selska Street and connections toward Delnice and Rijeka, but the park entrance is another 1.5 kilometres away. The Parks of Croatia portal warns that public transport is extremely limited, effectively one daily connection to Crni Lug and back. Travellers without a car should therefore coordinate both legs before setting out.
