Issa was an ancient Greek city founded in the area of present-day Vis during the first half of the 4th century BC. The settlement developed on the slopes beside Vis harbour, with defensive walls, an ordered street network and its own coinage, becoming an important maritime and trading centre in the central Adriatic. Archaeological remains are now dispersed through the town and around Gradina hill, while many finds are preserved in the local archaeological collection. The visit is therefore not a single enclosed monumental complex; it works best as a combination of walking through the site and seeing museum displays. Issa is a key stop for understanding Greek settlement and influence in the Adriatic.
