Vela Svitnja cove, west of Vis harbour, preserves the remains of an ancient merchant vessel carrying amphorae. Divers reported the site in the early 1970s, and investigations recorded a concentration of amphorae at a depth of 25–30 metres. More than five hundred complete or nearly complete amphorae were recovered, together with other ceramic, metal and coin finds. The cargo dates to the second half of the 2nd century BCE, around the transition to the 1st century BCE. Finds from Vela Svitnja are displayed in the underwater-archaeology collection of the Vis Local History Museum, housed in Batarija Fortress. The wreck itself is for responsible, specialist diving.
