The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, known locally as Our Lady of Spilica, stands in Vis and belongs to the old parish of the Assumption. The confraternity of St Mary was founded in 1511; sources record that the church was already standing in 1513 and was enlarged in 1521. It was formally made the parish church of the island of Vis in 1592. Its present appearance is the result of several additions, combining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. Its treasury of sacred art includes a painting of the Virgin and Child between St John the Baptist and St Peter, by the Venetian painter Giovanni Santacroce, dating from the turn of the 16th century.
