Fortica occupies the hill above Hvar's historic centre and connects with the town walls. Construction of the defensive system began after 1278, and by 1551 a new Renaissance fortress had replaced the earlier Gothic castle. A gunpowder explosion badly damaged it in 1579, followed by repairs and later additions. Today visitors can climb from the centre through the old town, with views gradually opening over the harbour. From the ramparts comes one of Hvar's best-known panoramas, extending across the town and the Pakleni Islands. The visit is particularly rewarding for travellers interested in fortifications, photography and scenic walks, while the ascent itself helps explain the strategic relationship between the fortress, walls and harbour below.
