The Church of the Annunciation is first documented in the fourteenth century, when it stood on sea cliffs before later changes created today's shoreline. Its façade carries a fifteenth-century Annunciation relief associated with the school of Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino. The main altar preserves a sixteenth-century icon of the Virgin that Hvar residents traditionally turned to in times of danger, while the side altar of St Barbara was connected with the artillery confraternity from Fortica. For centuries the church has served the confraternity of the Holy Cross. Its central position and preserved confraternal history make it a worthwhile stop on a walk linking Pjaca, the waterfront and the western old town.
