St Mark's Church is now understood through the remains of a former Dominican monastery complex first documented in 1312. Its unusual dedication to St Mark reflects Venetian patronage, while the site also played political and cultural roles over the centuries. The former three-aisled church contains graves of Hvar families from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries and the grave of composer Josip Raffaelli. The monastery was dissolved in the early nineteenth century, after which much of the complex was demolished or altered; the apse was later converted into a chapel. The site suits visitors who enjoy reading archaeological and architectural layers and is easily incorporated into a walk through Hvar's compact historic core.
