Construction of Napoljun fortress began in 1807 and was completed in 1812 under orders from Marshal Marmont. The hill was subsequently named Poljun after the fort's designation. Built by the French military with forced labor from the local population working for minimal wages, the fortress later became home to the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Geodesy Observatory, which houses Croatia's largest telescope with a one-meter mirror. Its elevated position at 230 meters offers outstanding views of Hvar town, the Pakleni Islands, Vis, Brač, and Šolta.
