Knin Fortress occupies the summit of Mount Spas above the town and ranks among Dalmatia’s largest medieval fortresses. Its oldest section, the early Croatian Upper Town, dates to the 10th century; the complex was enlarged in the late Middle Ages, reinforced under Ottoman rule, and given its final form during the Venetian reconstruction of 1710–13. Ramparts, gates, loopholes, cisterns and the Topana tower reveal changing military needs across the centuries. The fortress now contains the Knin Museum, while some former military buildings are used for exhibitions. It suits visitors drawn to fortifications, Knin’s history and expansive views from above the town.
