Vela Luka lies at the western end of Korčula, in a long bay that provides a naturally sheltered harbour. Its key site stands above the town: Vela Spila is one of the Adriatic’s major prehistoric sites, with finds dating back more than 20,000 years. The waterfront has a very different character, with a long promenade, shipbuilding and maritime traditions, and connections to nearby coves. For swimming and boat trips, the islet of Proizd stands out for its white rocks and the Bili Boci beaches, while nearby Ošjak is covered in dense pine forest. Marked walking trails lead to Vela Spila, Hum, Dub, St Juraj and Gradina, and cycling routes also cross western Korčula. Vela Luka is therefore more than its waterfront: the best stay combines archaeology, walking and at least one boat outing. As it lies at the opposite end of the island from Korčula Town, it is useful to plan western Korčula as a separate area.
Vela Spila is Vela Luka’s leading individual site. The cave lies above the bay, and archaeological finds document human presence over a very long period, including traces more than 20,000 years old. A marked walking route leads there from the town centre, combining an archaeological visit with views across the bay. A different outing leads to Proizd, an islet with the Bili Boci beaches and white rocks, or to nearby Ošjak beneath its pine forest. There are also marked walking trails towards Hum, Dub, St Juraj and Gradina. This choice shows that Vela Luka is as rewarding for exploring on land as it is for excursions by sea.
