Vela Spila lies on Pinski Rat hill above Vela Luka and is one of the most important prehistoric sites on the Croatian islands. Its archaeological deposits record human presence from the Late Palaeolithic through the Mesolithic and Neolithic into later periods, allowing researchers to trace long-term changes in diet, environment and ways of life. The large cave chamber is partly lit through openings in its roof, giving the site a striking visual character as well as archaeological significance. It is reached by climbing from Vela Luka towards Pinski Rat. The site is most rewarding for visitors interested in archaeology, prehistory and the long development of human life on the Adriatic islands.
