Porporela projects into the sea beside St John’s Fortress, sheltering the entrance to Dubrovnik’s old harbour. The present masonry breakwater was completed in 1873, continuing a much older history of harbour protection. The path around the foot of the fortress ends beside a red navigation light, with views of Lokrum and boats approaching the port. Here the earlier defensive architecture of St John’s can be compared directly with later harbour engineering. To finish a walk along Stradun with a different perspective, continue through the port to Porporela, where the confined streets give way to an open seaward outlook.
