St John’s Fortress marks the southeastern end of Dubrovnik’s defensive circuit beside the Old Port entrance. Its massive seaward face and position next to Porporela show how the fortifications protected shipping and access from the water. Different parts of the building now house the Maritime Museum and Aquarium, connecting defensive architecture with maritime history and marine life. Approach the fortress on foot through the Old Port, then continue towards Porporela for a view back across the harbour and walls. The exterior waterfront walk and visits to the institutions inside are distinct experiences, each revealing a different aspect of the same fortress.
