The Cathedral of the Assumption stands beside the Rector’s Palace and Gundulić Square, on the site of an earlier cathedral destroyed in the earthquake of 1667. Its dome and three-aisled Baroque interior offer a striking change of scale after the narrow surrounding streets. The treasury provides a separate focus, bringing together precious metalwork and reliquaries associated with St Blaise. Architecture and devotional objects therefore give different ways into the cathedral’s history, beyond simply photographing its façade. Combine the cathedral with the nearby Rector’s Palace and St Blaise’s Church to compare three distinct settings for Dubrovnik’s civic and religious life.
