Vukovina
About this place
Vukovina is a Turopolje settlement in the Velika Gorica area, known for the parish church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Alapić manor house. The manor is one of the rare surviving examples of wooden lower-nobility residential architecture in continental Croatia, and the Velika Gorica Tourist Board includes it among the few preserved wooden manors of Turopolje. The Alapić family held land in and around Vukovina, acquired by Baltazar Alapić from Duke John Corvinus at the end of the 15th century. The present manor—a two-storey wooden house with a turret on its steep roof—is associated with the mid-18th century. The village centre is marked by the church of the Visitation; its building history records that it became a parish church at the end of the 18th century. Vukovina is consequently a rewarding short stop on a Turopolje wooden-architecture route, combining sacred heritage, the trace of a noble estate and the distinctive building tradition of the Turopolje plain.
Vukovina’s identity rests on two contrasting strands of Turopolje heritage. The Alapić manor embodies the secular tradition of timber-built gentry houses, with service rooms below, formal living quarters above and landscaped grounds, while the Church of the Visitation preserves the village’s role as a Marian gathering place. The manor is associated with the Alapić family, whose member Baltazar bought the local estate in 1496; much later, sculptor Mladen Mikulin used part of it as a studio. After suffering damage in the 2020 earthquakes, the church was restored and blessed again in 2024. This close combination of a noble residence, contemporary outdoor sculpture and an active pilgrimage tradition gives Vukovina a character quite unlike the more urban stops around Velika Gorica.

Things to do
Begin at the Church of the Visitation, restored after the 2020 earthquakes and formally blessed again in 2024. Continue towards Jurja i Vjekoslava Stančića Street to view the Alapić manor from outside; this historic building is not presented as a museum with regular daily opening hours, so focus on its timber architecture, old lime tree, grounds and outdoor sculptures. Cyclists can incorporate Vukovina into Zagreb County’s Brown Route, which passes the manor before continuing through Turopolje groves, gravel sections and field tracks. To place the building in a broader local context, continue to the especially well-preserved Modić-Bedeković manor in Donja Lomnica or visit the Turopolje Museum collections in Velika Gorica.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Vukovina stands beside the D30 state road, on the route running south from Velika Gorica towards Petrinja, making a car the simplest way to combine the village with other Turopolje heritage sites. To reach the Alapić manor, turn off opposite the parish church, cross the Stara Lomnica stream and enter Jurja i Vjekoslava Stančića Street. Arriving by bicycle works particularly well as part of Zagreb County’s Brown Route, which alternates between paved roads, gravel and field tracks around Vukovina and passes the manor. Walking along the busy D30 is not a useful sightseeing strategy; it is more practical to stop in the central part of the village and link the church and manor by short stretches along local streets.
