Stari grad Lukavec
About
Lukavec Old Town stands on the Turopolje plain beside the village of the same name, a rare surviving masonry fortification in this region. Its present form is about three centuries old, while an earlier timber predecessor was built to defend Turopolje from Ottoman incursions. The building was closely tied to the administration of the Noble Commune of Turopolje: noble assemblies elected the prefect in its first-floor hall, and the commune’s archive was kept here until 1848. It passed through the hands of numerous owners before the people of Turopolje took it over when it was already close to ruin. An exterior visit works especially well as part of an exploration of Turopolje heritage.
