About this place

Lukavec is a Turopolje village south of Velika Gorica, defined by Stari grad Lukavec, a fortified manor built on low ground and historically surrounded by water. The present masonry structure was completed in 1752 as a Renaissance-style castle, succeeding timber forts repeatedly built and damaged from the 15th century onwards. Four corner towers, around 70 loopholes and a tall entrance tower reveal its defensive role, while the coat of arms of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje above the gate records its civic importance. The tower contains a chapel dedicated to Saint Lucy, and the upper hall once hosted the noble assembly that elected Turopolje’s župan; the municipality’s archive remained here until 1848. A visit can be incorporated into a marked cycling route from Velika Gorica that passes the castle before continuing through Turopolje villages. The grounds become particularly lively around St George’s Day, when a large ceremonial bonfire is lit outside the walls. As the castle was damaged in the earthquake of 29 December 2020 and subsequently entered structural restoration, interior access should be planned only after consulting current host notices.

Lukavec belongs to Turopolje’s rural landscape, yet the lowland castle at the village entrance gives it an unexpectedly monumental landmark. Stari grad served more than a defensive purpose: its hall hosted elections for the head of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje, whose archive remained here until 1848. A carved coat of arms, two lions and a Latin inscription dated 1752 explicitly connect the building with Turopolje’s nobility. The village’s cultural continuity is now represented by KUD Stari grad Lukavec, whose repertoire preserves dances and songs associated with Turopolje, Posavina and other Croatian regions.

Things to do

Focus the visit on the exterior of Stari grad Lukavec, examining its entrance tower, four corner towers, defensive openings and the 1752 coat of arms of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje. A walk around the former water channels reveals why the castle occupied this particular patch of level ground. For a longer outing, use the Velika Gorica Tourist Board’s Cycling Route 1, which reaches the fort after crossing the Sava–Odra relief canal and then continues through Ribnica, Jagodno and Novo Čiče. During the St George festivities, the space outside the walls hosts historical units, workshops, folklore performances and the evening lighting of the ceremonial bonfire.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Lukavec is connected by road with Velika Gorica and lies about 20 kilometres south of Zagreb. Drivers visiting the castle should aim for the village entrance, where Stari grad stands out on flat Turopolje ground beside the local road network linking Velika Gorica with neighbouring settlements. Cyclists can use the official Route 1, which leaves Velika Gorica via Duga and Lukavečka streets, crosses the Sava–Odra relief canal and passes directly beside the castle. Its continuation towards Ribnica, Jagodno and Novo Čiče creates a broader circuit through the Turopolje countryside without immediately retracing the approach.
