About
Andautonia Archaeological Park lies in Šćitarjevo, near Velika Gorica, on the site of a Roman town that had municipal status and its own administration by the 1st century. Inscriptions preserve the names Municipium and Respublica Andautoniensium, while the town served as an administrative, economic, cultural and religious centre for the wider area for almost four centuries. Excavations by the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb began in 1981, and the park opened in 1994. Visitors can follow museologically presented remains of urban structures and streets in the parish-yard area, within a landscape that was not urbanised again after the town declined in the late 4th or early 5th century.
