Šćitarjevo
About this place
Šćitarjevo is a Sava lowland village near Velika Gorica whose modern streets and properties overlap the remains of Roman Andautonia. The ancient town developed in the first century on routes linking Siscia with Poetovio and Emona, and urban life continued until the transition from the fourth to the fifth century. Opened in 1994, the Andautonia Archaeological Park presents approximately 2,500 square metres of Roman streets, drainage infrastructure, and public and residential buildings. A walk through Šćitarjevo can connect the park with the parish church of St Martin the Bishop, built in 1642 and subsequently enlarged, as well as surviving traditional timber houses and courtyards. Under the 2026 schedule, the park is open from 2 May to 31 October on Saturdays and Sundays from noon until 6 pm; group tours and workshops require advance booking. Bus route 309 reaches Šćitarjevo from both Zapruđe and Velika Gorica. The combination of a focused archaeological site, flat Turopolje scenery and proximity to Zagreb makes the village particularly well suited to a half-day history excursion.
Šćitarjevo is inseparable from Andautonia, the Roman town that developed beside the Sava on the Siscia–Poetovio and Emona–Siscia routes. Excavations undertaken from 1969 to 1994 revealed a street network, drainage system, public buildings and houses, part of which is now displayed across an archaeological park of about 2,500 square metres. The village’s later historical layer appears around the Church of St Martin the Bishop, built in 1642 and extended between 1758 and 1768, and in several surviving traditional timber houses. The churchyard itself stands over ancient foundations, while stone blocks originating from Andautonia were reused in the church’s construction.

Things to do
Start at the Andautonia Archaeological Park, where an exposed Roman street, drainage system and foundations of public and residential buildings reveal the town’s layout. After the excavated structures, inspect stone monuments found around Šćitarjevo, then walk to the Church of St Martin the Bishop and look for traditional courtyards with timber houses. Cyclists can continue along the signed spur from the Red Route: from the main route near Črnkovec, it runs 4.1 kilometres each way to Šćitarjevo over a mixture of asphalt and gravel. In 2026, schedule an independent visit for a weekend between 2 May and 31 October, from noon to 6 pm; workshops and guided group visits must be arranged in advance.

Getting there and around
Šćitarjevo is served by bus route 309, which the Archaeological Museum identifies as reaching the site from Zagreb’s Zapruđe terminal and from Velika Gorica in the direction of Sasi. Drivers approaching from Zagreb use the corridor across Domovinski Bridge, while the route from Velika Gorica follows the flat roads through Turopolje settlements. Cyclists can take the Red Route from Velika Gorica via Novo Čiče and Bukevje, then turn near Črnkovec onto the 4.1-kilometre spur for Andautonia.
