About this place

Rasinja lies about ten kilometres west of Koprivnica, where the Gliboki stream emerges from the Kalnik foothills into the Podravina plain. Its position on an old route linking the Drava valley with Apatovac and Križevci gave the settlement importance in the Middle Ages. Today, that history survives in the remains of the Old Town, the parish Church of the Holy Cross and the Inkey family estate. The New Rasinja Manor was built from 1883 to 1885; two historicist wings survive from its former H-shaped plan, with the southern wing distinguished by a neo-Baroque façade and corner tower. At the village edge, a 35-hectare lake was created in 1984 when a dam was built for the former fish farm. Roughly one and a half kilometres downstream, another 70 hectares of ponds follow the Gliboki and provide habitat for herons and other wetland birds. Rasinja consequently joins an aristocratic estate, an engineered lake, fishponds and vineyards rising towards Kalnik within one compact landscape.

Rasinja marks the transition from flat Podravina to the northern Kalnik slopes, beside the Gliboki stream and roughly ten kilometres from Koprivnica. The former estate centre remains legible around the Inkey castle, its parkland and service buildings, the parish church and the family burial ground. The Inkey de Pallin family held the Rasinja estate for almost two centuries and constructed the newer castle between 1883 and 1885. A contrasting part of the village identity is Lake Rasinja, a 35-hectare reservoir where vineyards, woodland and meadows meet. The close grouping of castle, lake and railway station gives this small settlement an unusually coherent set of historic, landscape and transport landmarks.

Things to do

Start exploring Rasinja at Inkey Castle and look for the surviving southern wing, its Neo-Baroque façade and the corner tower with a pointed roof. The nearby Church of the Holy Cross and remains of the old fortified settlement allow visitors to trace the estate centre’s development within a compact area. Continue to the village edge and Lake Rasinja, formed in 1984 when a dam was built for the former fish-farming enterprise. Covering about 35 hectares, the reservoir offers a quieter second half to the walk, with open water bordered by meadows, woods and Rasinja’s vineyard slopes. A broader heritage outing can extend to Budim hill, where the local tourism authority records traces of the Templar settlement known as Opoja.
