Stari grad Veliki Kalnik
About
Old Town of Veliki Kalnik stands on the southern slope of the steep Sveta Katarina hill in the Kalnik range. The fortress is documented from the 13th century, and its defence during the Mongol invasion of 1242 is traditionally associated with King Béla IV. It was built in several phases: the medieval towers and palaces occupy the rock, while later structures lie below them. Its distinctive remains include two towers linked by a narrow passage cut into the rock, defensive walls and traces of a chapel. Steep stairways, some carved directly into the living stone, connect the separate parts of the ruins. The site suits visitors drawn to medieval history and a hiking landscape.
