Novo Virje
About this place
Novo Virje occupies the flat Podravina landscape in the northeast of Koprivnica-Križevci County, where its 37-square-kilometre municipal area reaches towards the Drava and the Hungarian border. The municipality encompasses Novo Virje and the outlying communities of Medvedička, Drenovica and Crnec, creating a landscape of long village roads, cultivated fields and tracks leading to old river channels. The community’s bond with the Drava is captured by Dravsko veslo, a race in traditional wooden boats first organised by the Konak heritage association in 2009. The nearby river corridor forms part of Croatia’s section of the UNESCO Mura–Drava–Danube Biosphere Reserve, noted for floodplain forests, wet grasslands and other river habitats. Within the settlement, the parish church is dedicated to St Joseph the Worker; the municipal spatial plan also records the Army of the Sacred Heart chapel in Medvedička and the grave of local writer Miroslav Dolenec Dravski. Novo Virje is therefore best understood outside conventional museums: beside the Drava, among the small sacred landmarks of its scattered hamlets and through the surviving tradition of the wooden čon boat.
Novo Virje’s character comes from its position between Podravina farmland and the shifting river landscape of the Drava. Medvedička, Drenovica and Crnec are not visitor districts but parts of the same elongated rural municipality, linked by local roads and fields. Near the river, side channels, floodplain woodland and wet habitats fall within the UNESCO Mura–Drava–Danube Biosphere Reserve. The local word čon, meaning a traditional wooden boat, gained a public role through the Dravsko veslo race established in 2009. Community life remains centred around the Church of St Joseph the Worker, while Medvedička contains the Army of the Sacred Heart chapel, recorded in the spatial plan as heritage of local value.

Things to do
Begin at the Church of St Joseph the Worker, then follow the village roads towards Medvedička to find the Army of the Sacred Heart chapel. Reserve the second part of the visit for the Drava landscape, viewing side channels, willow stands and the floodplain from publicly accessible tracks rather than approaching unmarked banks during high water. A modest piece of local literary heritage survives at the cemetery, where the grave of writer Miroslav Dolenec Dravski is recorded. If the visit coincides with Dravsko veslo, the traditional čon-boat race offers the clearest introduction to Novo Virje’s river culture; the first competition was held in 2009.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Novo Virje is most easily explored by road because the Church of St Joseph the Worker, Medvedička, Drenovica, Crnec and the approaches to the Drava are spread across an elongated rural area. From the direction of Đurđevac, a car or bicycle is the practical choice, with local roads providing links among the hamlets. The municipal office at Trg Vladimira Jagarinca 5 is a useful central reference point before continuing towards the river. Final approaches to old channels may use farm tracks or unpaved roads, which can become muddy after rain; unmarked sections of the floodplain should be avoided.
