About this place

Mursko Središće, Croatia’s northernmost town, developed on the Mura’s right bank where the D209 road and bridge lead towards Središče ob Dravi in Slovenia. Although its riverside position invites a walk, the town’s most distinctive story lies underground: Cimper, once a coal-separation plant, now interprets the lives and work of Međimurje miners. St Barbara’s Promenade, named for the miners’ patron saint, follows the Mura from Zalešće fishpond towards Žabnik, joining industrial memory to the river landscape. Nearby Peklenica’s Petroleum Memorial Park recalls organised oil extraction beginning there in 1856 and explains local terms such as “pekel” and “kolomajz”. In town, the Rudar Ivek miner sculpture and illuminated railway bridge extend the mining and transport story outdoors. Mursko Središće therefore fits a focused day visit: tour Cimper first, walk to Zalešće, then make the short trip to Peklenica or continue beside the Mura towards Sveti Martin.

Mursko Središće is officially described as Croatia’s northernmost town, yet its local title, “the town of miners”, reveals more about its singular identity. Coal extraction shaped northern Međimurje, and the former Cimper separation plant survives as a mining interpretation centre rather than disappearing with the closed pits. The Mura simultaneously defines the town’s northern edge, the Slovenian border and the route of a promenade dedicated to St Barbara, patron saint of miners. Along this compact urban axis, the Rudar Ivek sculpture, mining collection, riverbank and railway bridge tell Mursko Središće’s story through labour history and cross-border movement rather than a conventional old-town centre.

Things to do

Start at Cimper, where a multimedia exhibition inside the former coal-separation plant explains the mines and everyday lives of Međimurje’s miners. From Cimper, find the Rudar Ivek sculpture before descending to the Mura and St Barbara’s Promenade. The maintained riverside route runs from Zalešće fishpond towards Žabnik in Sveti Martin na Muri and extends for 12 kilometres. A shorter visit can finish around Zalešće and the illuminated railway bridge, while walkers or cyclists with more time can continue towards the Fusek ferry. Complete the circuit in nearby Peklenica, where a small shaft at the Petroleum Memorial Park marks the area’s historic surface oil seep.

Practical information

Getting there and around

The D209 state road links Mursko Središće with Čakovec and access towards the A4 motorway, then crosses the Mura bridge into Slovenia towards Središče ob Dravi. The station stands on local railway L101, the roughly 18-kilometre Čakovec–Mursko Središće–state-border line. HŽ Passenger Transport’s 2026 timetable lists regional services linking Čakovec, Dunjkovec, Macinec and Središče; some trains do not operate at weekends or on public holidays, so check the travel date carefully. Cimper, the town centre and the Mura riverbank can be combined on foot, whereas a bicycle or car is more practical for Peklenica and the farther sections of the 12-kilometre St Barbara’s Promenade.
