Končanica
About this place
Končanica sits at 170 metres above sea level, ten kilometres northwest of Daruvar and six kilometres southeast of Veliki Zdenci. Farmland surrounds the village, while an extensive chain of fishponds follows the Ilova; construction of the present ponds began in 1900 on former marsh woodland and meadows. The ponds subsequently expanded westward downstream, making fish farming one of the clearest visual signatures of Končanica’s landscape. The parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates from 1909, and the Czech eight-year school, founded in 1944, reflects the village’s enduring Czech-language educational tradition. A find of 670 small Hungarian coins from the 14th and 15th centuries adds a much earlier layer to the local story. Separate from the production ponds, the 25-hectare sport-fishing lake has benches, shelters and a barbecue area and also welcomes walkers. Few villages combine a medieval coin hoard, Czech schooling and a century-old fish-farming landscape as closely as Končanica does.
Končanica belongs to the Daruvar area, but its strongest local signature comes from its Czech community: by the late 19th century the village had 1,313 residents and developed into Croatia’s largest Czech minority settlement. Česká beseda Končanica keeps that heritage visible through performances, the Maškarada carnival procession and Days of Czech Culture and Gastronomy. The village’s second defining feature is the Ilova fishpond complex, developed from 1900 across approximately 1,470 hectares. Between the Church of the Assumption and this broad waterscape, Končanica has formed an identity in which Czech cultural life and freshwater fish farming are inseparable.

Things to do
Start in central Končanica at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, then continue towards the fishponds along the Ilova. For an accessible short outing, choose the recreational pond beside the Končanica–Veliki Zdenci road: its roughly 27 hectares contain several small islands, shelters and benches, and it welcomes both anglers and other visitors. This spot offers a close view of the fish-farming landscape without entering the production areas of the much larger, 12-kilometre complex. If local dates align with your stay, look for a Česká beseda event—particularly Maškarada or the Days of Czech Culture and Gastronomy, where Končanica’s Czech heritage appears in processions, handicrafts and food.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Končanica is connected by road with Daruvar and Veliki Zdenci, and Croatia’s D5 state road passes through the village. The Daruvar-area public transport network for 2026 lists a weekday Daruvar–Končanica service, with a 14:05 departure from Daruvar during the school year. Because this is a limited local connection, travellers should confirm the return arrangement in the current timetable before setting out. The recreational pond lies close to the Končanica–Veliki Zdenci road and is most easily reached by road. A car or bicycle is considerably more practical for exploring the wider fishpond landscape than relying on the single weekday bus connection.
