Donji Vidovec
About this place
Donji Vidovec lies in eastern Međimurje, five kilometres south-west of Kotoriba and close to the confluence of the Mura and Drava. Its defining landmark is not a building but a craft: until the mid-20th century, local people panned for gold on the Drava, Mura and Sava, a tradition now maintained by the Vidovski zlatari association. Local municipal records connect the gold panners with a charter from Maria Theresa that protected their work along the riverbanks. The craft heritage is complemented by the late-Baroque parish church of St Vitus from the 18th century and its rectory, dated to 1765. Nearby stand Neoclassical statues of the Holy Trinity from 1792 and St Florian from 1794. In 2026, the village marked 800 years since its first written mention in 1226. The Drava remains more than a historic backdrop: its channels, gravel bars and proximity to the Mura confluence shape Donji Vidovec’s story of water, river gold and traditional crafts. A rewarding visit combines a walk through the historic centre with a prearranged introduction to the gold-panning heritage.
Donji Vidovec is a municipal centre in eastern Međimurje, close to the Mura–Drava confluence and five kilometres south-west of Kotoriba. Former names included Bistrica and Sveti Vid, and in 2026 the village celebrated 800 years since its first written record in 1226. The rivers shaped its signature craft: until the mid-20th century, residents panned for gold on the Drava, Mura and Sava. The Vidovski zlatari association now preserves the tools, techniques and memory of that livelihood. The historic centre is marked by the 18th-century church of St Vitus, a rectory from 1765, and statues of the Holy Trinity and St Florian dated to 1792 and 1794. Donji Vidovec’s river heritage and sacred landmarks are therefore best understood as parts of the same local story.

Things to do
Begin in the centre with the late-Baroque church of St Vitus, its 1765 rectory and the nearby statues of the Holy Trinity and St Florian. Next, explore the village’s gold-panning story through the Vidovski zlatari association, which preserves the traditional tools and knowledge used to recover fine river gold. Along the Drava, the channels and gravel bars reveal the landscape that made the craft possible. An earlier edition of the “Dani zlata i starih zanata” event combined a panning demonstration on a gravel bar with a boat trip along the Dubrava hydropower channel towards the Mura–Drava confluence. As demonstrations and boat outings depend on organised programmes, arrangements should be made directly with local hosts.
