About this place

Donja Dubrava occupies the eastern edge of Međimurje beside the Drava and close to the Mura–Drava confluence, in a level landscape shaped by both rivers. It lies 29 kilometres from Čakovec and 20 kilometres from Koprivnica. Water also defines its history: local šajkaši traded along the river, flojsari floated timber downstream, and gold was once washed from the Drava’s deposits. Today the scene is structured by the old river channel, the tailrace canal and the Dubrava hydropower system. The 79.78 MW plant covers the Drava section from Hrženica to Donja Dubrava and is the lowest of Croatia’s three Drava hydroelectric stations. Visitors can explore a network of flat cycling loops around the suspension bridge, old channel, canal and the locally named “špinc”, where the old Drava meets the power-station outflow. The long Međimurje cycling route also passes through Donja Dubrava, linking the Drava plain with Goričan and the Mura corridor. Rather than a conventional monument destination, Donja Dubrava is best understood through its riverside paths, embankments and memories of river-based trades.

Donja Dubrava belongs to Lower Međimurje and occupies the Drava plain near the point where the Mura joins the larger river. Here, backwaters and water-engineering structures are not merely scenery but the basis of local identity. Residents were historically known as šajkaši river traders, flojsari timber rafters and Drava gold washers. The settlement also developed a strong craft tradition and hosted the timber company Ujlaky–Hirschler and Son. Embankments and the hydroelectric system later altered the village’s relationship with the old riverbed, while the tailrace canal and the final section of the Dubrava plant created today’s characteristic waterscape. Donja Dubrava consequently combines memories of river occupations with modern infrastructure that still determines the form of its surroundings.

Things to do

To explore Donja Dubrava, start at the suspension bridge and follow the local cycling loop toward the Donji Vidovec bridge. After crossing, the route returns on gravel to the “špinc”, where the old Drava channel meets the Dubrava power station’s tailrace canal, before heading upstream to the suspension bridge. This flat circuit suits an easy recreational ride, while experienced cyclists can continue onto the much longer M6 Međimurska route. The M6 covers 130.92 kilometres, reaches Donja Dubrava after Prelog and then turns toward Goričan, Podturen and Mursko Središće. Pause beside the old Drava channel to watch wetland birds and consider the same river corridor as the former workplace of Donja Dubrava’s timber rafters and gold washers.

Getting there and around

The principal road approach to Donja Dubrava follows the D20 on the Čakovec–Prelog–Donja Dubrava corridor. The A4 Zagreb–Goričan motorway is about 15 kilometres away, while the route across the Drava area continues toward neighbouring Koprivnica-Križevci County. The village has organised bus transport, although departures for Čakovec should be checked against the current operator timetable rather than older municipal notices. No railway crosses the municipality; the nearest station is approximately five kilometres away. Donja Dubrava is an important cycling junction: the M6 leaves the Drava direction here and turns toward Goričan, while the route across the bridge toward Legrad connects with the Drava cycling corridor.
