Poljane is a dispersed hillside settlement within the City of Opatija, positioned on the slopes of Mount Učka above Ičići and the Kvarner coast. Its homes cluster along Poljanska cesta and in hamlets such as Menderi, Strmice, Maćuki, Ladeti and Špadići, while the older village core includes a church and a small local school. Unlike Opatija’s coastal districts, Poljane has no shoreline of its own; the nearest seaside facilities are downhill in Ičići, whose beach and marina provide direct access to Kvarner Bay. The setting between sea and mountain creates a distinctive rhythm: a morning swim in Ičići can be followed by an afternoon in Veprinac or at the Poklon pass. Poklon is home to the Učka Nature Park visitor centre and the starting point of the eight-kilometre Plas educational trail to Vojak, Učka’s 1,401-metre summit. Autotrolej route 35 links Poljane with Opatija, Volosko and Veprinac, with a March 2026 service notice confirming its passage through the village. Poljane therefore suits travellers seeking Kvarner views, mountain access and proximity to the Opatija Riviera without expecting a beach outside their door.
Poljane belongs to the City of Opatija, yet its character comes from its position on the slopes of Učka above Ičići rather than from a seaside promenade. Planning documents describe it as a largely dispersed settlement of individual houses, with a small older core, a church and a local school. Its neighbourhood area includes a series of recognisable hamlets and lanes, among them Andreti, Babiloni, Menderi, Maćuki, Strmice and Sveti Petar. Residential clusters, cultivated slopes and routes towards Veprinac and Učka meet here above the sea. Poljane is therefore not a miniature version of Opatija: instead of waterfront hotels and the Lungomare, it offers a hillside base for descending to Ičići or climbing towards medieval Veprinac.

Poljane has no coastline, so swimming requires a descent along Poljanska cesta towards Ičići. Ičići Beach occupies the centre of the coastal village below, and its sandy section is particularly popular with families because it provides easier entry into the sea; the remaining sections offer the organised waterfront setting typical of the Opatija Riviera. Another option is Slatina in central Opatija, distinguished by broad concrete terraces, a sandy area, sports facilities and a children’s playground. Ičići is the more natural choice for a quick swim from Poljane, while Slatina fits better into a full day of sightseeing in Opatija. The steep return to the hillside makes a car or local bus more practical than walking with beach equipment.
From Poljane, descend first towards Ičići, then return uphill and continue to Veprinac, where the town gate, St Mark’s parish church and ethnographic collection reveal the medieval heritage of Opatija’s hinterland. For a mountain day, drive to Poklon, the 922-metre pass and principal visitor hub of Učka Nature Park. Its visitor centre interprets the mountain’s natural and cultural heritage. Experienced walkers can tackle the eight-kilometre Plas trail to Vojak; the outing takes about four hours and ends near the lookout tower at Učka’s 1,401-metre summit. Families wanting a gentler alternative can use the three-kilometre Fairy Učkarica Trail at Poklon, designed as an approximately 90-minute walk.
Autotrolej route 35 links Poljane with Volosko, Opatija and Veprinac. Under the timetable change effective from 5 March 2026, the Opatija departure serving Poljane and Veprinac moved to 14:20, while the return from Veprinac through Poljane towards Opatija moved to 14:50; all other departures should be checked against the current schedule. Drivers arriving from the coast climb from Ičići along Poljanska cesta, while access to Učka continues through Veprinac by following the brown signs for the nature park. Route 32 connects Rijeka with Opatija and Lovran, where passengers can transfer to the local service for Poljane. Because the village consists of scattered hamlets, a car is useful for accommodation located away from route 35 stops.
Poljane lies on the slopes of Učka above Ičići and has no coastline of its own.
The Fairy Učkarica Trail near Poklon is three kilometres long, takes about 90 minutes and is designed for all generations.
Autotrolej suburban route 35 links Volosko, Opatija, Poljane and Veprinac; check the timetable valid from 5 March 2026 before setting off.
