Vrbnik rises on a steep rock above Krk’s eastern coast, giving its historic centre the feel of a stone maze above the sea. Narrow lanes and stone houses preserve the settlement’s medieval urban pattern. Vrbnik is an important centre of Glagolitic heritage, and the Vitezić Family Library holds a valuable book collection. Wine is another defining part of its identity: the indigenous Žlahtina grape is grown in the surrounding vineyards. Swimming is possible below the town and in nearby coves, including Zgribnica and Potovošće. A visit can begin in the old town, continue down towards the sea and end among the vineyards. In a compact area, Vrbnik brings together medieval character, Glagolitic culture, viticulture and a striking position above Kvarner.
The wider Vrbnik area extends well beyond the old town on its cliff. The municipality also includes Risika, Garica and Kampelje, with Vrbničko polje stretching between settlements, while the coast becomes steeper and less accessible towards the south. To the north, gentler coves and walking routes lead towards Risika and Sveti Marek. This geography allows Vrbnik to work as a base for three very different kinds of day: exploring the town, swimming on the eastern coast or hiking and cycling through the field and hinterland. Within only a few kilometres, the landscape moves between harbour, cultivated countryside, karst pasture and the coves of the Vinodol Channel.

Vrbnik’s historic centre retains the urban pattern of a medieval town, with narrow streets and stone houses. Its cultural importance is defined by its Glagolitic tradition and the Vitezić Family Library. Vineyards growing Žlahtina surround the town, while beaches below it and in nearby coves include Zgribnica and Potovošće. A short visit can therefore combine the old town, vineyards and the sea.
Zgribnica is Vrbnik’s town beach below the historic settlement, combining pebble sections with developed concrete areas and seasonal visitor facilities. From there, a landscaped path through pine trees reaches the quieter Kozica in about ten minutes on foot. Potovošće lies roughly three kilometres from Vrbnik and offers a pebble shore, sandy seabed, parking and seasonal amenities. Farther north near Risika, Sveti Marek is known for its sandy shoreline and the remains of an old church nearby. The layout gives visitors a useful choice between a beach that can be reached on foot from town and more distant coves where a car or bicycle is more convenient.

For an active day, one of the strongest local options is the Putovima Frankopana circuit, a 20-kilometre walking route for which the tourist board suggests about five hours. From Vrbnik it passes Melska and Sveti Marek coves, Risika, the Gradec fortress and Vrbničko polje. A shorter outing can simply descend to Zgribnica, continue along the developed coastal path towards Kozica and leave the rest of the day for swimming. From the sea, the local wooden boat Curicta offers excursions along Krk’s eastern coast, including southern routes towards Zečevo and Mala Luka and northern trips in the direction of the Krk Bridge.
Vrbnik’s official hospitality directory includes the Vinotel Gospoja restaurant, Konoba Nada, Luce, Placa and Restaurant Žlahtina, together with smaller bars and seasonal venues. One of Vrbnik’s practical advantages is that a meal can easily be combined with wine tasting because wineries and cellars form part of the settlement and the surrounding Vrbničko polje. The local eno-gastronomic offer is built around wine, island cheeses, meat and fish, so lunch can become part of the sightseeing experience rather than a separate excursion. The greatest concentration of dinner options is around the historic core, its approaches and the lower harbour area overlooking the Vinodol Channel.
The Vrbnik Tourist Board office is at Placa Vrbničkog statuta 4. Its official visitor directory also lists local shops, a fish market, boat rentals, a diving club and other practical services. The historic core consists of very narrow streets, so leaving the car in a designated parking area and exploring the centre on foot is the sensible approach. Beaches outside the settlement, such as Potovošće or Sveti Marek, require a separate short drive. Walking and cycling routes are documented on dedicated tourism pages, including trails towards Risika, Garica and Vrbničko polje, making the official tourism site useful for planning activities beyond the old town.
Vrbnik lies on the eastern side of Krk, about 28 kilometres by road from the Krk Bridge, so visitors arriving from the mainland do not need a ferry. The official tourism website lists car, bus and air travel among the ways of reaching the area, with Rijeka Airport near Omišalj serving the island. From the bridge, road access continues through central Krk towards Vrbničko polje and then into the settlement. For local travel to beaches and the municipality’s smaller villages, a car or bicycle gives considerably more flexibility than public transport, particularly when visiting Potovošće, Risika and Sveti Marek.
The wine is made from the indigenous white Žlahtina grape grown in Vrbničko polje.
