Oprtalj is a fortified hill town in northern Istria, looking across the Mirna valley towards the unmistakable silhouette of Motovun. Its old quarter begins beside a broad Venetian loggia displaying carved stone fragments, while a terrace on the former ramparts opens towards the Istrian hills and, on clear days, the sea. The parish church of St George, completed in 1526, has an unusually flat-topped bell tower rather than the pyramidal crown common in Istria. Smaller churches dedicated to St Roch and the Blessed Virgin Mary preserve frescoes, including Marian scenes painted in 1471 by Clerigin of Koper. Below the town, the former Parenzana narrow-gauge railway offers a rewarding walking and cycling route; the steep climb from Oprtalj-Portole station takes roughly 40 minutes. Livade, closely associated with Istrian truffles, lies at the foot of the hill, while Istarske Toplice occupies the Mirna gorge beneath the 85-metre Gorostas rock. Stone lanes, vineyard roads and a small dining scene make Oprtalj best suited to an unhurried visit.
The principal historic ensemble combines the town gate, a Venetian loggia containing carved stone monuments and a viewpoint raised on the former ramparts. St George’s parish church dates from 1526 and is distinguished by its flat-topped bell tower. In the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Clerigin of Koper painted scenes from the life of Mary in 1471; the small frescoed Church of St Roch provides another intimate stop. Outside town, notable landmarks include the Oprtalj-Portole viaduct on the Parenzana and the 85-metre Gorostas rock above Istarske Toplice.
Dining choices inside Oprtalj are limited, so reserving ahead is sensible. Konoba Oprtalj, at 17 Matka Laginje Street beside Belvedere Square, serves regional food within the historic centre. A broader food itinerary descends to Livade, where truffles are central to the village’s identity, and continues through the municipality’s farm stays and wine roads. An autumn visit can coincide with the 2026 Zigante Truffle Days or Tuber Food Fest, both scheduled in Livade during October and early November.
Allow roughly 40 minutes for the steep walk from the former Oprtalj-Portole station to the town.
