Lupoglav sits in north-eastern Istria below the south-western slopes of Ćićarija, where routes from Buzet, Rijeka and Pazin meet. The present settlement grew beside the road and railway station, so it lacks the familiar Istrian layout centred on a church tower. Its older story lies about 1.5 kilometres east, where a medieval castle once occupied the hill and the Brigido family built a fortified country residence below it in the 17th century. Lupoglav makes a practical base for a municipality stretching from Ćićarija and Učka Nature Park to the Boljun field. At Vela, or Vranjska, Draga, limestone towers and crags form one of Učka’s most striking geological landscapes. Farther south, Boljun rises above the Boljunčica valley with its castle, loggia and old lanes, while the Aurania trail links its fortifications with Vranja. Walkers can also take the Semić–Brest–Semić circuit, whose prepared viewpoint looks across Vranja, Boljun and the surrounding slopes. Lupoglav is therefore less a destination for a polished old-town square than a well-placed starting point for castles, mountain trails and Istria’s rugged north-eastern edge.
Lupoglav stands 384 metres above sea level beneath Ćićarija and close to Učka, at the meeting point of routes towards Buzet, Pazin and the Rijeka area. Unlike many Istrian settlements, its centre is not defined by a bell tower: houses spread along the road and railway during the 19th and 20th centuries. The medieval Castrum Lupoglau occupied a height above Gorenja Vas, while the Brigido family created a newer fortified complex below the old castle in the 17th century. The municipality links the Ćićarija uplands, Učka Nature Park and the Boljun field with the historic settlements of Vranja and Boljun.

Start in Lupoglav by finding the Brigido family’s fortified residence and the site of the earlier castle about 1.5 kilometres east of today’s centre. Continue towards Vranja and Vela Draga, where distinctive limestone pinnacles rise below Učka and established crags attract climbers. For a longer walk, choose the Semić–Brest–Semić circuit; its prepared viewpoint opens towards Vranja and Boljun. Another option follows the Aurania trail between Vranja and Boljun’s fortifications. In Boljun, wander through the old lanes to the castle and loggia above the Boljunčica valley, then return towards Lupoglav to complete a full day across this corner of eastern Istria.
Lupoglav is a road junction between Buzet, Pazin and Rijeka, with the Učka Tunnel corridor providing access towards the Rijeka side. Its station lies on the Istrian railway towards Pula and Buzet; historically, a freight branch also ran from here towards the port of Bršica. During works on the Buzet–Lupoglav section in 2026, HŽ Passenger Transport replaced selected trains with buses stopping beside Lupoglav station, so the current connection should be checked before travel. A car remains the most practical way to reach Vranjska Draga, Boljun and the trailheads, as the municipality’s sights are dispersed between Učka, Ćićarija and the Boljun field.
The old castle stood above Gorenja Vas, about 1.5 kilometres east of present-day Lupoglav.
The Aurania trail runs between Vranja and Boljun’s castle, with visitor infrastructure provided along its approaches.
Yes, Lupoglav has a station on the Istrian line towards Buzet and Pula; engineering works in 2026 brought replacement buses on some sections.
