Tršće, Čabar
About this place
Tršće is a mountain settlement in the City of Čabar, deep in the forests of Gorski Kotar and far from the Kvarner coast. Its setting belongs to the Čabar border country, where snow, woodland and short road links among Tršće, Čabar, Prezid and Gerovo shape everyday life. The most distinctive recreation site is the Rudnik ski area immediately beside the village, whose lift and slope give Tršće a winter identity unusual within the wider Kvarner region. In warmer months, the same mountain landscape lends itself to walking and drives towards the Kupa valley rather than seaside activities. Tršće also makes a base for reaching Risnjak National Park and the source of the Kupa, a turquoise karst pool beneath cliffs about 100 metres high. Within the village area, notable small churches include St Andrew’s, St John the Baptist at Sokoli and the Visitation of Mary at Ravnice. The local calendar adds another layer through Tršće’s Winter Party, Wild Garlic Day and volunteer-fire-brigade celebration.
Tršće is administratively part of the City of Čabar in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, yet its landscape is thoroughly mountainous rather than coastal. Forests and uplands surround the village, while nearby Rudnik contributes a snowy slope and a local skiing tradition. Small religious landmarks are dispersed between Tršće and its hamlets: alongside St Andrew’s Church are St John the Baptist at Sokoli and the Church of the Visitation at Ravnice. The village’s annual rhythm also appears in Čabar’s 2026 calendar, which lists the Winter Party, Wild Garlic Day, a volunteer-fire-brigade celebration and Sports Day in Tršće.

Things to do
In Tršće, pause at St Andrew’s Church, built in 1860 and restored in 1996, then head towards Rudnik above the village. Tršće’s ski centre opened in 2003, but check lift operation and snow conditions before a winter visit. Outside the ski season, Rudnik can be included in a hike: the summit stands at 1,052 metres, and the described route from Tršće passes the church and Frbežari before reaching the base of the ski area. The village also has a mining heritage tied to the Čabar ironworks: iron-ore extraction began there in 1665 in the time of Petar Zrinski.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Local buses connect Tršće with Čabar, but departures are sparse and geared towards everyday travel within the Čabar area. The timetable published by the City of Čabar lists a morning departure from Tršće at 4:30, reaching Čabar at 4:45, so the bus is not a flexible basis for sightseeing. A car simplifies access to Rudnik, Sokoli, Ravnice and the more distant trailheads towards the source of the Kupa. Gorski Kotar’s winter conditions make a road check sensible before driving, while the current bus departure should be confirmed on the City of Čabar’s official timetable page.
