Prezid
About this place
Prezid lies within the City of Čabar at the far north-western edge of Gorski Kotar, immediately beside the Croatian–Slovenian border and Babno Polje. The village occupies a high karst basin shaped by forests, sinkholes, springs and a notably cool mountain climate. Its best introduction is the 7.5-kilometre Trbuhovica trail, which starts in central Prezid and passes beech and fir woodland, meadows, pastures and water sources. The settlement’s name is associated with the late Roman defensive system Claustra Alpium Iuliarum, traces of whose wall can be visited in the Prezid area. Local culture is represented by the Vesel mountain ethnographic house and the Prezid heritage collection, while the lost mills and sawmills along the Trbuhovica and Mlake streams recall an older water-powered economy. Prezid is neither coastal nor a lake resort and has no developed beach; visitors come for hiking, borderland karst scenery and local heritage. Bus services towards Čabar and Rijeka exist but are limited, making a car useful for reaching scattered hamlets and trailheads.
Prezid belongs to the Čabar borderland, a microregion beside Slovenia at the north-western edge of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The settlement grew in a karst basin enclosed by forested uplands and shares a distinctly cross-border mountain character with nearby Babno Polje. Its name and heritage are linked to remnants of a Roman defensive wall belonging to the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum system. Springs and streams at Trbuhovica and Mlake once powered several local mills and sawmills; their documented history survives, although the machinery and buildings do not. Today, the Prezid heritage collection, the Vesel ethnographic house and the Trbuhovica trail connect the basin’s natural features with its Roman remains and water-powered past.

Things to do
Start in central Prezid near the church and follow the 7.5-kilometre Trbuhovica trail. The circuit passes through beech and fir woods, mountain meadows, pastures, sinkholes and drinking-water springs, presenting the defining features of the Prezid basin in a single walk. Along the section associated with the Roman limes, look for remnants of the defensive wall traditionally linked to the village’s name. Afterwards, visit the Vesel mountain ethnographic house and the Prezid heritage collection, whose objects interpret former life in this border community. A longer option is the ten-kilometre Prezid–Babno Polje–Vražji vrtec circuit, which enters the Slovenian border area and therefore requires an identity document.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Prezid has no railway station, so public transport depends on the Čabar area’s bus services. The City of Čabar publishes a timetable linking Prezid, Čabar and Rijeka, including a morning connection reaching Prezid through Čabar. Departures are limited and primarily serve local needs, so the return journey should be planned before setting out on the Trbuhovica trail or towards Babno Polje. A car makes it easier to reach the surrounding hamlets, Čabar, Tršće and Gerovo, as well as more remote trailheads across the Čabar region. Travellers crossing into Slovenia at Babno Polje should carry a valid travel document even though this is a short local border route.
