About this place

Čabar occupies a narrow valley of the Čabranka at an elevation of 523 metres, directly beside the Croatian–Slovenian border and about 45 kilometres northwest of Delnice. The settlement first appears in written records in 1642, in an estate register associated with Petar Zrinski; its growth accelerated after the Zrinski family established an ironworks here in the mid-17th century to process local limonite ore. That industrial and noble legacy remains visible in the 1651 Zrinski Castle, now home to a local heritage collection, the Vilim Svečnjak gallery and a Routes of the Frankopans interpretation centre. The Baroque Church of St Anthony of Padua, dating from 1663, is another defining landmark in the compact centre. A marked route behind the castle leads towards the source of the Čabranka, emerging from a fissure beneath the cliffs of Veliki Obrh and reached by a paved lane followed by a short woodland path. Beyond the town, the wider Čabar district spreads through densely wooded country encompassing Gerovo, Tršće, Prezid and Plešce. Its border river, Zrinski industrial heritage and scattered mountain settlements give Čabar a character quite distinct from the busier central corridor of Gorski kotar.

Čabar is the centre of a heavily forested and sparsely populated border region. Gerovo, Tršće, Prezid and Plešce share the same strong mountain identity, meadows and cool climate. In Čabar itself, the cultural focus is Zrinski Castle, while the natural landscape begins almost behind its walls on the path to the source of the Čabranka. This closeness between manor and river source captures the character of the place: heritage and forest are not separate zones but can be crossed between in only a few minutes on foot.

Things to see

Zrinski Castle in Čabar dates from 1651 and is associated with Petar Zrinski. Parts of the original wall, tower and ground-floor vaulting survive, while the complex now contains a local-history collection, a gallery of works by Vilim Svečnjak and a “Routes of the Frankopans” interpretation centre. The natural counterpart to the castle is the source of the Čabranka, emerging from the rocks of Veliki Obrh and reached by a short forest path from town. The wider area also offers Tropetarska stijena, Sveta Gora, the Church of St Anthony and local-history collections in Prezid.

Things to do

A strong short itinerary begins at Zrinski Castle and its interpretation centre, then continues along the marked trail to the source of the Čabranka. For a longer walk, the Tropetarska stijena trail is a short but more demanding circuit with views towards Čabar, Risnjak and the Slovenian hills. With a full day available, use a car to link Čabar with Prezid, Gerovo or Tršće and experience how widely dispersed the municipal area is. The Čabranka also appeals to anglers and visitors looking for quiet walks beside fast mountain water.

Food and drink

Dining around Čabar usually means leaving the compact town centre and driving to one of the surrounding settlements. The Gorski Kotar tourist board’s Gastroventure programme highlights Bistro Pr’ Lipe in Plešce and Buffet Tajči at Kozji Vrh. Its regional selection revolves around mountain ingredients and dishes such as potato polenta, game served with gnocchi, and strudels filled with blackberries or apples. Pr’ Lipe sits in the Čabranka valley, while Tajči is in the wooded country above Prezid, illustrating how widely dispersed the local food scene is. Before setting out from Čabar, contact the chosen establishment directly to confirm that it is serving and whether advance notice is expected.

Practical information

Practical information

Čabar is a mountain destination where weather can quickly change trail conditions, especially outside summer. The Čabranka source requires only a short walk, but Tropetarska stijena and more remote sites call for sturdy footwear and basic hiking preparation. The City of Čabar website publishes local bus information and an events calendar, while the Gorski kotar portal provides trail descriptions and GPX links. Check current opening hours before planning a visit to the castle’s museum and interpretation spaces.

Parking

For parking in Čabar itself, use the public area in Petra Zrinskog Street; the municipal report records its registration as public property of the Town in September 2022. The town’s traffic decision also designates public parking at King Tomislav Square, by the Culture Centre at 20 Ivan Goran Kovačić Street, and along Narodnog oslobođenja Street. From these spaces, the Zrinski Castle and the centre are within walking distance. During the 2023 Flower Friday event, the Town asked drivers to leave King Tomislav Square clear, so one of the other listed areas is the better choice on that day.

Getting there and around

Čabar lies away from the main motorway through Gorski kotar and is usually reached by regional roads via Delnice, Gerovo or from the Slovenian side. A private car is the most practical way to link Čabar with Prezid, Tršće and other dispersed settlements. The city website also publishes a local bus timetable, but for a visitor itinerary covering multiple sites the flexibility of a car remains a major advantage. Within the centre, the castle and the start of the path to the Čabranka source can be linked on foot.
