About this place

Kupjak is a mountain village in the Municipality of Ravna Gora, within the inland, highland part of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County rather than the Kvarner coast. Municipal planning documents place the wider Ravna Gora area between roughly 690 and 1,366 metres above sea level, while Gorski Park Kupjak stands at 780 metres. Winter sport has unusually deep local roots: Sports Society Kupjak was founded in 1979 to develop cross-country skiing, and the village’s natural-track luge club followed in 2018. Today the most visible visitor facilities are gathered at Gorski Park Kupjak, at Kupjak 84C, where the sledding run is 150 metres long. The village consequently suits travellers looking for snow, forest and a distinctly Gorski Kotar setting, not Adriatic beaches. Kupjak is also a separate settlement within Ravna Gora municipality, with its own volunteer fire brigade and sporting associations rather than merely a holiday-home enclave. Gorski Park is about five minutes by road from the Ravna Gora exit on the A6, making the village a convenient short stop on journeys between Zagreb and Rijeka.

Kupjak’s identity grows from its Gorski Kotar elevation, wooded landscape and unusually strong sporting tradition. Sports Society Kupjak was established in 1979 to encourage cross-country skiing among young residents, while the Kupjak luge club was founded in 2018 for natural-track sledding. The village’s current recreational focus is Gorski Park Kupjak at 780 metres above sea level. Municipal documents also identify a dedicated Kupjak holiday-home zone, covered by an urban plan adopted in 2014. This combination of a permanent village, weekend houses and winter facilities gives Kupjak a character quite different from the coastal destinations elsewhere in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.

Things to do

A winter day in Kupjak can begin on the 150-metre sledding run at Gorski Park Kupjak, located at Kupjak 84C. The regional tourism board lists this particular slope among Gorski Kotar’s organised winter locations. Time in the snow can be followed by discovering the village’s sporting story, which reaches back to the founding of Sports Society Kupjak for cross-country skiing in 1979 and continued with a natural-track luge club in 2018. A visit is easily paired with nearby Ravna Gora, whose walking routes and visitor facilities are only a short local drive away.
