Jasenice occupies the southern foothills of Velebit, between a stark karst hinterland, the Novigrad Sea and the Zrmanja canyon. The name refers both to the administrative centre and to a wider municipality that includes Maslenica, Rovanjska, Zaton Obrovački and Modrič, so most seaside facilities are found in those coastal settlements. The defining mountain landmark is Tulove grede, a rocky ridge about one kilometre long. The historic Majstorska cesta adds another distinctive line across the landscape: 24 kilometres of the road cross the municipality through Podprag, Prag and Kraljičina vrata towards Mali Alan. A few kilometres east of Maslenica, the Zrmanja canyon is recognisable from the Winnetou films. The local bora is more than background weather; around Prag it can reach hurricane force and substantially affect driving, hiking and time by the shore. Swimming is concentrated on the pebble coves of Maslenica, Rovanjska and Modrič, while the two bridges spanning Novsko ždrilo remain the clearest landmarks for travellers arriving from the Zagreb–Split motorway.
Jasenice draws its identity from the unusually close meeting of Velebit and the Novigrad Sea. The older settlement consisted of hamlets from which present-day Modrič, Rovanjska, Maslenica and Jasenice developed, while Zaton Obrovački extends the municipality towards the Obrovac hinterland. Views of Tulove grede, the powerful bora around Prag and the old olive groves that gave Maslenica its name define the scenery. Jasenice is also a road gateway to the Zrmanja canyon: viewpoints and landscapes used in the Winnetou films are approached in the direction of Obrovac. This meeting of sheltered sea, exposed mountain karst, film locations and the historic Majstorska cesta sets Jasenice apart from conventional beach resorts on the Zadar coast.

Beaches in the Jasenice municipality are predominantly natural pebble coves, framed by views of Velebit and Tulove grede. In Maslenica, swimming is centred on Male Vrulje, Nova plaža, Tratarica and the shoreline along Obala Franje Tuđmana. Rovanjska offers its central village beach, Splovina and bathing points along Obala Ante Mateka, while Modrič beach lies farther west. Because this coast sits directly beneath Velebit, sudden bora gusts can make conditions markedly different from more sheltered bays around Zadar. Municipal maritime-use documentation from 2024 specifically lists Male Vrulje, Nova plaža, Tratarica, Splovina, Rovanjska’s waterfront and Modrič as coastal micro-locations intended for licensed seasonal services.
Start in Jasenice with views of southern Velebit, then descend to Maslenica and the old Maslenica Bridge above Novsko ždrilo. Continue towards Obrovac for the approach to the Zrmanja canyon, a few kilometres east of Maslenica, where scenes from the Winnetou films were shot. For the mountain portion, drive the historic Majstorska cesta through Podprag and Prag towards Kraljičina vrata and Tulove grede; 24 kilometres of this route cross the municipality. Reserve the afternoon for a swim at Male Vrulje in Maslenica or Splovina in Rovanjska. Before setting out, check bora warnings, especially for the exposed road near Prag and the bridges over Novsko ždrilo.
The simplest approach to Jasenice is by car via the A1 motorway and Maslenica interchange, followed by local roads towards Jasenice, Maslenica, Rovanjska and Obrovac. The two bridges over Novsko ždrilo are the main road landmarks, although strong bora winds can restrict traffic on exposed sections. The tourist office publishes coach connections along the Zadar–Starigrad–Rijeka–Pula corridor, with selected services stopping in the municipal area; its available timetable PDF does not clearly state a validity year, so departure times should be confirmed with the operator. A private car is considerably more practical for Majstorska cesta, Tulove grede and the separate coves around Modrič, particularly outside the main summer season.
A 24-kilometre section crosses the municipality through Podprag, Prag and Kraljičina vrata towards Mali Alan.
The principal options are Male Vrulje in Maslenica, the village beach and Splovina in Rovanjska, and the beach at Modrič.
The canyon approach lies a few kilometres east of Maslenica, along the route from Jasenice towards Obrovac.
