Marmont’s Gloriette stands on the Batarija area between Kamerlengo Castle and St Mark’s Tower. It was erected in 1808 as a memorial associated with the period of French administration. Six Doric columns rise from a square base and support beams that create a distinctive open hexagonal form. When built, the monument was surrounded by the sea and linked to shore by a small bridge; today’s setting reflects later land reclamation and landscaping of Batarija. Although compact, it is architecturally easy to read and fits naturally into a walk from the waterfront toward Kamerlengo and the western end of the old town.
