Sveti Križ Začretje occupies a low hill in the Krapinčica valley, close to the confluence zone of the Šemnica and Pačetina streams. Ten kilometres north of Zabok and 120 metres above sea level, it sits directly beside the Zagorje railway and the Zagreb–Macelj motorway. Its centre does not follow the usual elongated village pattern: the parish church anchors the west side, the spreading castle stands to the east and the school closes the northern edge. The Church of the Holy Cross preserves a 15th-century Gothic Lamentation relief, while the castle took shape in the late Baroque and Neoclassical periods and has an unusual V-shaped plan. A granary erected in 1796 now houses the Žitnica Museum, displaying ethnographic collections assembled by the Zvirek group and works by local painter and printmaker Ivan Lovrenčić. Restored in 1998, the building opened to visitors on 14 September 2000. With the church, castle, museum and square grouped closely together, the essential sights form an easy walking circuit, while the local railway stop makes a car-free visit possible.
Sveti Križ Začretje is defined by a compact historic centre framed by its parish church, castle and former school building. Its position on a low hill above the Krapinčica valley gives the settlement a distinct visual unity, even though the A2 motorway and railway occupy the nearby Zagorje transport corridor. The medieval community developed around the church recorded in a 1344 parish list, while the estate was associated with the Keglević family in the 16th century. The Sermage and Vranyczany families later shaped the history of the castle and its lands. The village’s cultural identity also draws on two locally born artists: painter and printmaker Ivan Lovrenčić and cartoonist Rudi Stipković, whose works remain represented in local collections.

Start at Queen Jelena of Croatia Square and enter the Church of the Holy Cross to look for its 15th-century Gothic Lamentation relief and late-17th-century high altar. Continue to Sveti Križ Začretje Castle, whose wings form an unusual V; interior access depends on the current cultural programme and availability. The next stop is the Žitnica Museum in Lavoslav Vukelić Avenue. Its ground floor presents displays devoted to hemp processing, folk costume and the traditional Zagorje home, while the Ivan Lovrenčić gallery holds 16 paintings, 30 drawings and 53 prints donated by the artist. Complete the circuit at the school collection, where further Lovrenčić works are accompanied by cartoons from locally born Rudi Stipković.
Sveti Križ Začretje lies beside the A2 Zagreb–Macelj motorway and has its own station on the railway running through Zabok towards Krapina. HŽ Passenger Transport’s 2025/2026 timetable lists stops here on the Zabok–Krapina–Đurmanec route, making the train suitable for a day trip from Zabok with the appropriate connection. From the station, visitors can continue on foot to the square, church, castle and Žitnica Museum because these sights are grouped in the settlement centre. Drivers leave the A2 at the Sveti Križ Začretje exit. Reaching the outlying chapels in Komor Začretski, Klupci Začretski and Završje Začretsko is considerably easier by road transport.
The museum contains ethnographic displays by the Zvirek group and 16 paintings, 30 drawings and 53 prints by Ivan Lovrenčić.
The late Baroque and Neoclassical castle has an unusual V-shaped plan, with an older manor incorporated into its northern wing.
